When people ask where to find the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Livermore Valley, we just smile and invite them up to the tasting room. At McGrail Vineyards, we live and breathe Cabernet, estate fruit, small-lot winemaking, and a family obsession with producing wines that balance power, elegance, and place. If you love full-bodied reds with real character, come taste what the Livermore Valley and our hillside vineyards can do.

Why Livermore Cabernet is special

Livermore is one of California’s historic wine regions. Pioneer winemakers established wineries here in the 1800s, and the valley put California on the world wine map long before many other regions did. That long viticultural history is part of why Cabernet thrives here: our soils, drainage, and climate create concentrated, structured fruit that expresses its place on the palate. The valley’s mix of warm days and cool evenings, plus gravelly, well-draining soils (our property is loam with great drainage), promotes deep root systems, flavor concentration, and bright natural acidity, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our Story So Far And A Proud Moment Along the Way

Our family planted the McGrail estate vineyard in 1999, produced our first commercial Cabernet in 2004, and have been focused on Cabernet ever since. Over the years, we’ve learned how to farm our Greenville Hill blocks precisely with different clones, thoughtful spacing, and a variety of barrel programs, so that from these 16 acres we can make a family of Cabernets with distinct personalities.  In 2015, we purchased another 30 acres and planted additional Cabernet on our Lucky 8 Vineyard with the same care, precision, and sustainability in mind.

One of the defining moments for our Cabernet program was the national recognition our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve received: it went on to win the Sweepstakes, “Best Red Wine” award at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (the largest domestic competition), earning the distinction of Best Red Wine in the United States. That honor changed the trajectory of our winery and put our Cabernets on many people’s must-try lists.

McGrail: Livermore’s “Cab House”

We like to call ourselves Livermore’s Cab house because Cabernet is our focus: the estate vineyard was planted with two Cabernet clones, Lucky 8 Vineyard was planted with three Cabernet clones, and we produce multiple Cabernet bottlings from the same estate parcel, and each release showcases a different expression, from our Reserve (structured, cellar-worthy) to single-site and special-reserve bottlings that highlight depth and oak nuance.

Our winery philosophy, growing exceptional grapes, small lot handling, deliberate oak programs, and hands-on cellar work, lets the site speak while adding texture and balance. In short: Cabernet is our craft, and we do it with intention.

Our Award-Winning Cabernets

We’re proud of the recognition our Cabernets have received—both the historic sweepstakes win and many more recent medals and high scores. Here are a few you should try when you visit:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve: Our flagship Reserve has a long list of high marks (Wine Enthusiast scores consistently above 90, Double Golds, and sweepstakes recognition both in San Francisco and in Texas with the Lone Star Wine Competition). The Reserve is classic Livermore Cabernet: concentrated dark fruit, refined tannins, and layered oak influence.
  • Patriot Cabernet Sauvignon: A bold, structured expression from our estate that shows the power of the site and the influence of new American Oak.  Recent competition tracking has also put Patriot among our top contenders with scores of 92 for Wine Enthusiast and Platinum recognition at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
  • A Jo Elet – The Good Life: Our Good Life Cabernet (sometimes listed as “A Jo Elet-The Good Life”) brings hillside intensity and a riper, fruit-forward profile. It has earned strong finishes in competition and is a favorite for guests who like a plush, spiced-filled Cabernet. It also went on to win gold at the Orange County Fair Wine Competition.
  • James Vincent: Our smallest lot production, James Vincent, is a concentrated, barrel-driven Cabernet aged extensively in new French oak. It has earned top scores and gold medals in multiple competitions such as the San Francisco Wine Competition, Cristaldi, and Wine Enthusiast. If you want something with power and length, James Vincent is the one to look for.

We track competition results carefully. Recent score sheets and award summaries show James Vincent and Patriot achieving top marks (including 94-point showings in industry tastings and top medals at regional competitions), and the Good Life and Reserve continuing to collect medals and high scores year to year.

Taste with Us

Our wines really start to make sense once you’re tasting them up here, with a little vineyard breeze and a view in front of you.

In the tasting room, you can explore the full range of McGrail Cabernets—Reserve, Patriot, The Good Life, James Vincent, and more—each with its own personality. We’ll share the story behind the wines, from where the fruit was grown to what that vintage was like and how it all came together in the cellar.

And if you’re wondering what to pair, when to open, or what to take home, we’re always happy to help you find the bottle that fits your table (or your cellar).

If you can’t make it in person, our online shop and wine club are great ways to keep a rotating selection of our Cabernets coming to your door. We have shipping members all across the United States, from California to states like Florida and Ohio. But if you’re local or planning a wine trip, don’t think twice before joining us on the hill! Tasting among the vines makes all the difference.
