Focus on one thing first, let’s make world class Cabernet and then we can talk about the rest.
— James McGrail
A Family Vision, Brought to Life
McGrail Vineyards began with Jim and Ginger McGrail, who purchased their Greenville Road property and planted the estate vineyard in 1999. Their vision was simple, but ambitious: grow exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon in the Livermore Valley and create something meaningful for their family, their community, and future generations.
At first, the McGrails grew grapes and sold their fruit to Steven Kent Winery. But as their connection to the vineyard deepened, so did the dream of creating a winery of their own. What began with a few barrels of wine shared among family and friends gradually became the foundation for one of Livermore Valley’s most cherished winery experiences.

The Beginning
A Vineyard Planted with Purpose
Jim and Ginger planted the estate vineyard entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, with guidance from respected local winegrowers and industry experts. They believed in the land, the climate, and the potential of Livermore Valley to produce world-class Cabernet.
In those early years, the focus was on the vineyard first. Jim and Ginger cared deeply about growing quality fruit, learning the wine business, and building something that could one day bring their family together. The winery was not just a business idea — it was a family legacy taking root.

Opening the Doors
Three McGrails, One Wine, and a Big Dream
By 2007, Jim and Ginger asked their daughter Heather to move home and help turn the family dream into a working winery. Heather came back to the Bay Area to open the tasting room alongside her parents, stepping into nearly every part of the business from the very beginning.
In April 2008, Jim, Ginger, and Heather officially opened the doors to McGrail Vineyards & Winery with just one wine: the 2005 McGrail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. It was a simple beginning, but one filled with purpose. Jim and Ginger had founded the winery and grown the grapes, and Heather helped bring the vision to life day by day, welcoming guests, helping with production, managing operations, building relationships, and sharing the McGrail story with the community.
Since those first days, Heather has remained at the forefront of McGrail Vineyards. As President, she continues to lead the winery with a hands-on approach, balancing the everyday demands of a growing business with the family values that have defined McGrail from the start.

Growing the Family Business
The People Behind the Experience
As the winery grew, so did the McGrail family’s involvement in the business. In 2009, Rachel McGrail, Jim and Ginger’s daughter-in-law, began helping part-time in the tasting room. Over time, her role expanded into the essential behind-the-scenes work that keeps the business running smoothly, including office management and countless day-to-day details.
That same year, longtime consulting winemaker Mark Clarin officially joined McGrail full time. Mark had been part of the winery’s early story, and as Heather prepared to start her own family, his role became even more important. With decades of winemaking experience, Mark helped guide and refine the Cabernet program while staying true to Jim and Ginger’s original vision: to make world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from Livermore Valley.
Jim and Ginger’s youngest daughter, Shannon, also played a meaningful role during an important period of growth. While working with the family business for several years, she helped develop events and experiences that brought more guests to the property and expanded the ways people could enjoy McGrail. She later followed in her father’s footsteps, as did her brother, continuing the McGrail family’s tradition of service through careers in law enforcement.
The Award that Changed Everything
A Proud Moment for McGrail and Livermore Valley
In 2012, McGrail Vineyards received national recognition when the 2008 McGrail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve won the Sweepstakes “Best Red Wine” award at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. For a small family winery that had opened its doors just a few years earlier with one Cabernet, the award was a defining moment. This was the first time the Livermore Valley had taken home this award!
It confirmed what Jim and Ginger believed from the beginning: Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon could stand proudly among the best.
- Carrying Forward Jim’s Legacy
Today, McGrail Vineyards continues to carry forward Jim’s legacy with Ginger, Heather, and Rachel guiding the family business. Heather still leads the charge, honoring her parents’ founding vision while helping shape the winery for the next generation.
- Women-Led, Family-Owned, and Rooted in Hospitality
McGrail Vineyards remains family-owned and women-led, guided by the values that have shaped the winery since the beginning: quality, generosity, hard work, and genuine hospitality.
